Best Places to Visit in Mauritius part2


In this second part, firstly we are going to talk about Ile aux Aigrettres island which is located to the south-east of Mahebourg in Mauritius and it is a very popular tourist attraction. lt is made up of coral limestone, with unique plants, beautiful trees and animals that are rarely found elsewhere in the world. The island is also a scientific research station and has been declared a nature conservation site in 1965, which is being preserved by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF). A gift shop is available at the visitor 's centre of the island, where you can purchase souvenirs. 





'Le Morne Brabant'  is a mountain in Mauritius which was declared as a WORLD Heritage site by UNESCO and was inaugurated as part of "La Route des Esclaves" on the 1st February 2009 in Mauritius. It is served as a memorium of many escaped slaves in the 18th - 19th centuries. This place is a sanctuary for the runaway slaves, also a cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. It is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island, which includes a multitude of endemic species and some of the rare beautiful flowers. Once on top, you will enjoy the amazing breathtaking turquoise lagoons. 



Mauritius was formed by a volcanic eruption and there are four dormant volcanoes in the island, Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, Trou Kanaka and Bassin Blanc. Trou aux Cerfs is surrounded by a lush forest consisting of indigenous plant species and giant pine trees. This dormant volcano is among one of the most famous natural tourist attractions in Mauritius and also a jogging spot for the local people in the region. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs was erupted once and has been dormant since the last 700 000 years.



Then we have the 'Seven Waterfalls' also known as the 'Tamarind Falls' and '7 Cascades' by the local people. It is surrounded by a magnificent green valley, waterfalls and ponds. As it is a tourist attraction, there are many sports activities such as, hiking trip, standing under the waterfalls, swimming in the pools of waterfalls which are surrounded by aquatic plants and many more..





Another place to spend time with family and friends in Mauritius is the 'Domaine Les Pailles'.  This place is full of serenity as it was once a sugarcane plantation that has been transformed into a cultural centre. Followed by a miniature railway, the horse-drawn carriage, the famous rum distillery, spice garden, a replica of an ox-driver of sugarmill,  children's playground and so on...





Then we have the Rodrigues island, a part of the Republic of Mauritius. This island is one of the best place to spend a simple and quiet holiday, with its natural beauty and many endemic spices. Without forgetting the base of its culture which are, food, music ("sega tipik") and crafts. Rodrigues island is 600km away from Mauritius and its the smallest of volcanic origin, surrounded by coral reefs in the Mascarene Islands. In the past year, the island was considered the tenth district of Mauritius then later on december 2002, the latter was granted an autonomous status and a regional assembly was established.

    I have family in Mauritius but I have never visited. This beautiful island for sure has a lot to offer. The Seven Waterfalls and Trou aux Cerfs are definitely on my bucket list now. Thanks for sharing.

Slavery in Mauritius

 As you might already know, the International Day for the abolition of slavery is right around the corner. A day celebrated to remind us what slaves endured in the past and had it not gone away, in what plight we might have been. Mauritius too has quite its fair share of slavery history, all starting way back in the 1600s. During the Dutch settlement in Mauritius, in 1600, Van Der Stel was the first governor who brought slaves to the island from Madagascar. A slave is categorised as a person who is forced to obey and work from dusk till dawn for  his masters without any pay.  These slaves were needed to cut ebony trees which were extremely rare trees used to make ships, trade to other countries and were very hard to cut down.  After the Dutch settlement in 1710, when the French rule started, they started bringing even more slaves but this time from Mozambique, India etc. They had to clear forests and cultivate sugarcane and other crops all over the island. Best Places to visit in Mauritius Part 1

                As stated many times by now, Mauritius is magnificent and today I'm going to tell you about some of the places that you could visit if you come to Mauritius some day. The most prominent attraction at its prime, The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (the SSR Botanical Garden) was created over 300 years ago by the French botanist Pierre Poivre. Later on 17 September 1988, the garden was formally named Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, in honour of the late Prime Minister, who led the country to independence.                   For a long time, it was ranked third among the best gardens around the world. It is notable for its pond of giant water lilies and covers an area of around 37 hectares. Many trees have been planted by great personalities, including Indira Gandhi, princess Margaret, Courtess of Snowdon, Francois Mitterrand and Robert Mugabe.
