Best Places to Visit in Mauritius part2


In this second part, firstly we are going to talk about Ile aux Aigrettres island which is located to the south-east of Mahebourg in Mauritius and it is a very popular tourist attraction. lt is made up of coral limestone, with unique plants, beautiful trees and animals that are rarely found elsewhere in the world. The island is also a scientific research station and has been declared a nature conservation site in 1965, which is being preserved by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF). A gift shop is available at the visitor 's centre of the island, where you can purchase souvenirs. 





'Le Morne Brabant'  is a mountain in Mauritius which was declared as a WORLD Heritage site by UNESCO and was inaugurated as part of "La Route des Esclaves" on the 1st February 2009 in Mauritius. It is served as a memorium of many escaped slaves in the 18th - 19th centuries. This place is a sanctuary for the runaway slaves, also a cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. It is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island, which includes a multitude of endemic species and some of the rare beautiful flowers. Once on top, you will enjoy the amazing breathtaking turquoise lagoons. 



Mauritius was formed by a volcanic eruption and there are four dormant volcanoes in the island, Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, Trou Kanaka and Bassin Blanc. Trou aux Cerfs is surrounded by a lush forest consisting of indigenous plant species and giant pine trees. This dormant volcano is among one of the most famous natural tourist attractions in Mauritius and also a jogging spot for the local people in the region. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs was erupted once and has been dormant since the last 700 000 years.



Then we have the 'Seven Waterfalls' also known as the 'Tamarind Falls' and '7 Cascades' by the local people. It is surrounded by a magnificent green valley, waterfalls and ponds. As it is a tourist attraction, there are many sports activities such as, hiking trip, standing under the waterfalls, swimming in the pools of waterfalls which are surrounded by aquatic plants and many more..





Another place to spend time with family and friends in Mauritius is the 'Domaine Les Pailles'.  This place is full of serenity as it was once a sugarcane plantation that has been transformed into a cultural centre. Followed by a miniature railway, the horse-drawn carriage, the famous rum distillery, spice garden, a replica of an ox-driver of sugarmill,  children's playground and so on...





Then we have the Rodrigues island, a part of the Republic of Mauritius. This island is one of the best place to spend a simple and quiet holiday, with its natural beauty and many endemic spices. Without forgetting the base of its culture which are, food, music ("sega tipik") and crafts. Rodrigues island is 600km away from Mauritius and its the smallest of volcanic origin, surrounded by coral reefs in the Mascarene Islands. In the past year, the island was considered the tenth district of Mauritius then later on december 2002, the latter was granted an autonomous status and a regional assembly was established.

The epic History of sugarcane in Mauritius

Being a resident of Mauritius, sugarcane has been a large part of my childhood. In fact, my house was just in front of a vast sugarcane field and we would often go out to play there, eating sugarcane and having a great time. As the cultivation season comes in , you can have a road trip at night and just breathe in the amazing scent that the freshly cut sugarcane oozes. But as you might already know, the history of sugarcane goes way back in the past, so let's get started!! In the year 1639, a dutch governor, Van Der Stel landed in Mauritius. He was the one who introduced the red sugarcane and various seeds and fruits including sugarcane saplings from Java. As his sailors and him were settling in the country, they tried to grow those crops but failed because of rats.
