Beautiful sacred monuments in Mauritius part 2

The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice church is one of the most famous churches, located in a small fishing village at the north of Mauritius. This church has a perfect visible framework, facing the turquoise and sandy beach in Cap Malheureux. It is famous for its bright red roof and also marks a spot in the history of the island. In the 1810s, the French were defeated from the British, which then this place was named Cap Malheureux ( literally means cape of bad luck).  This red- roofed 'photogenic' place is a very popular tourist destination and it is also found on the Mauritius postcards.

There are lots of sacred monuments across the island and the oldest among them is the Jummah Masjid, located in the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis. It is a sacred place for the Muslim community and was originally known as "Mosquée des Arabs"(mosque of the Arabs), because the Arabs were the first to discover Mauritius in the 10th century. Later on, the french governance granted a land concession to the growing population of Muslims. Years have went by but it still remains as as one of the most densely Muslim populated areas in the island. This sacred monument is combined with Creole, Indian and Islamic architecture.

Speaking of Port Louis, it is also the home of our oldest pagoda (Chinese temple). This pagoda was constructed in 1842 and has been the religious center of Chinese soldiers. It is painted in red, yellow and green colours which symbolises happiness, prosperity and purity that will definitely remind you of Imperial china. This temple is surrounded with a beautiful greenery view.

Best Places to visit in Mauritius Part 1

As stated many times by now, Mauritius is magnificent and today I'm going to tell you about some of the places that you could visit if you come to Mauritius some day. The most prominent attraction at its prime, The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (the SSR Botanical Garden) was created over 300 years ago by the French botanist Pierre Poivre. Later on 17 September 1988, the garden was formally named Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, in honour of the late Prime Minister, who led the country to independence.                   For a long time, it was ranked third among the best gardens around the world. It is notable for its pond of giant water lilies and covers an area of around 37 hectares. Many trees have been planted by great personalities, including Indira Gandhi, princess Margaret, Courtess o...

Activities in Mauritius

Mauritius is considered to have one of the world's most breathtaking coral reefs and marine life. In fact, special care is taken to preserve and protect our lagoons and marine world. As Mauritius is an island, the water is very clear and is suitable for many water sport activities. For many generations, sailors and scientists have been baffled by the mystery of coral reefs scattered across the oceans. Fun fact, sand is created by coral reefs which are broken by waves along a long period of time. Mauritius is just as fun on land as under water with a plethora of activities, some of which we are going to explore below.  Sea shells are collected by the locals on the beach to make beautiful decorative items and even souvenirs for tourists. Some of the items made are bracelets, necklaces and you will notice the people living near the coast wearing many of those on a daily basis. Many water sports have been set up to explore the life under the sea.   So here are some of the top...

The epic History of sugarcane in Mauritius

Being a resident of Mauritius, sugarcane has been a large part of my childhood. In fact, my house was just in front of a vast sugarcane field and we would often go out to play there, eating sugarcane and having a great time. As the cultivation season comes in , you can have a road trip at night and just breathe in the amazing scent that the freshly cut sugarcane oozes. But as you might already know, the history of sugarcane goes way back in the past, so let's get started!! In the year 1639, a dutch governor, Van Der Stel landed in Mauritius. He was the one who introduced the red sugarcane and various seeds and fruits including sugarcane saplings from Java. As his sailors and him were settling in the country, they tried to grow those crops but failed because of rats. After several attempts, in 1694, for the first time sugarcane, which is a grass and stores its sugar in the stems finally started growing in the island. Upon extraction, its massive amount of sugar could raise our blood...
